Kali Uchis: Red Moon In Venus

Angelic. Perfect. Beautiful.

Those are the first words that come to mind this New Music Friday to describe the new Kali Uchis album, Red Moon In Venus. She came swinging with fresh, smooth beats and silky-smooth vocals.

This album is all about love. That involves the trials, struggles, pain, and joy that take place within that theme. It is also done and executed fantastically with each song having a set mood.

The very lovey songs that explore the joy of love are paired with a faster pace beat and tempo. Meanwhile, the tracks that discuss the pains and struggles within love are fittingly matched with a slower tempo and production.

The album is structured nicely and is backed by the singer’s top-notch performance. Not only that, but the features that Uchis acquired for this album elevate and make this album excel.

Having assembled a team of Omar Apollo, Don Toliver and Summer Walker for an RnB album, Uchis may have released one of the best this year. Each star came with their own amazing performances.

This album should take first priority on New Music Friday. My favorites and songs I would recommend are “Fantasy” (feat. Don Toliver), “Endlessly”, and “Deserve Moonlight” (feat. Summer Walker).

Dreamville: Creed III: The Soundtrack

Dreamville has solidified their spot as one of the most consistent rap labels in the industry. They have brought projects such as Revenge Of The Dreamers III, D-Day: A Gangsta Grillz Mixtape, and include top tier artists such as J. Cole, JID and Ari Lennox.

On this new soundtrack album, they have brought that same consistency and originality they are known for. They also bring in outside collaborators to elevate the album, including performances from the diverse Big Sean, EST Gee, Blxst, Kehlani and more. The artists are also met with the same Dreamville crew we all know and love.

The Soundtrack was an enjoyable listen. There was plenty of variation with styles of Jazz, conscious rap, RnB, etc. With that being said this album is noticeably oriented around RnB more than anything.

Songs I recommend giving first listen include, “Ma Boy” (with JID & Lute), “Anthem” (with Big Sean & EST Gee), “Adonis Interlude (The Montage)” (with J. Cole).

Nicki Minaj: “Red Ruby Da Sleeze”

Nicki Minaj releases her first single of 2023 after hinting that there is a possibility that her next album could be coming out later this year. Is this a trailer for what is to come from the Queen of Rap?

If so, count me in. She brought versatility and an amazing performance on this new single. Should be higher up on the list to listen on this New Music Friday.

J-Hope & J. Cole: “on the street”

“on the street” is a happy track with a nice whistle melody that sets the tempo for the artist to rap at a steady pace. They both performed well, however, the mesh of these two artists felt out of place at times.

Personally, I will not be revisiting this collaboration anytime soon. It’s not awful, just not the type of music I’d be enticed to listen to. This is a very J-Hope song, therefore, if you are a fan of his previous work this song should be a good listen for you.

The Weeknd: After Hours (Live At SoFi Stadium)

Nothing new, just a great live performance by The Weeknd. Listen to a mesh of some of his most popular songs but like you’re actually at the SoFi stadium. The star seems to always impress, great listen this friday.

BIA: “SIXTEEN”

Her first single of 2023, almost a full year from her latest single back in 2022, brings a hyped up BIA rapping about her success from where she started.

Her independence is the main theme of the song and can be a bad b**** anthem these upcoming weeks. Great work from BIA this New Music Friday.

slowthai: UGLY

This album feels very raw. A genuine look at slowthai as an artist, but it should not stray from the fact that he performs great.

He brings a unique sound that screams authenticity. Whether that is with his auto tuneless voice or intricate dialogue, it feels human. UGLY is a great listen to expand your music taste.

Destroy Lonely: “if looks could kill”

This song is boring. Plain and simple it just maintains the same lacking beat and same flow the whole way through. In its entirety this whole track sounded like a Yeat song.

Do not rush to listen to the new single, instead listen to the Kali Uchis album.
