The Coyotes have traded Bjugstad to the Oilers in a deal for a pick and player

The Arizona Coyotes have made yet another trade. Journeyman forward Nick Bjugstad is being traded to the Edmonton Oilers to team up with Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, according to Elliotte Friedman. Bjugstad will add some forward depth to Edmonton’s offense.

Details of the Trade

In this trade, Edmonton is receiving forward Bjugstad in return for a 2023 third-round pick and Michael Kesselring. In addition to the assets of the trade, Arizona will retain 50% of Bjugstad’s salary. He is currently making $900,000 this season. According to Pierre LeBrun, the Oilers had exactly $450,167 left in cap space, clearly squeezing this deal past by a hair.

Bjugstad’s Statistics this Season

On the season, Bjugstad has 13 goals and 10 assists for a total of 23 points in 59 games. In his career, the Minneapolis, Minnesota native has only played one full season of 82 games. That was during the 2017-18 season with the Florida Panthers.

Outside of offense, the 6-foot-6 forward isn’t much help as he is bottom six two-way forward in the NHL. Still a good trade for depth, but the Oilers need to prioritize defense and goaltending. McDavid and Draisaitl can only do so much.

Bjugstad’s comments on the trade

Bjugstad seems excited to join the boys in Edmonton, as the Oilers released a video of his first thoughts on becoming an Oiler.

“Can’t wait to join the boys & try to help this team win a Stanley Cup,” Bjugstad said on his first thoughts after being traded, via Edmonton Oilers Twitter. “To be on the same side as these guys is going to be fun.”

Bjugstad also added his thoughts on a new jersey number with Edmonton.

“We will have to figure something out. My daughters love the mascots, so we will be sure to show him some love,” Bjugstad said after stealing Hunter the Lynx’s No. 72, via Oilers Twitter.
