NHL Trade Deadline 2023 Tracker: Live Updates On Every Major Move
It’s finally trade deadline day for the 2022-23 NHL season, but you could argue today is actually a bit anti-climactic. The leadup to this year’s deadline has been so spectacular it’s understandable to think all of the big names have already been moved. A whopping 13 first-round picks have been traded dating back when Bo Horvat was traded on Jan. 30, with 10 first-rounders on the move in the last week alone. We’ve seen both a lot of big-name rentals and some legitimate impact players with term moved as well, which is much more of a rarity.
The East has all but turned into an arms race, with just six points separating seventh from 13th and several of the top teams gearing up for a deep run. The West has been quieter, but maybe they’re saving the best for last. Either way, we’re about to find out within the next few hours. Early Trades Tricking In
I really like the Jakub Vrána trade for St. Louis. If you’re going to retool, a forward with his upside is a good player to take a risk on. The cap hit is high, but it’s only through next season. Curtis Lazar and Vladislav Namestnikov are decent bottom-six additions for contenders in New Jersey and Winnipeg, respectively. Brendan Lemieux is a not decent bottom-six addition for a Flyers team contending for neither the playoffs nor Connor Bedard. I guess you might as well take the draft pick, though, especially since Zack MacEwen is nothing special.
Nick Bonino Returns to Pittsburgh
Nick Bonino is a solid replacement for Teddy Blueger at 4C, who Pittsburgh traded away to clear cap space to acquire Mikael Granlund earlier in the week. Don’t expect another 18 points in 24 playoff games run like he put up in 2016, but it’s a solid depth move.
Wild Deal Greenway, Acquire Sundqvist
Greenway is big (6’6”) but has seen his scoring numbers stagnate then regress over the last two seasons. Don’t expect a Tage Thompson late-bloomer arc, but we’ll see if the Sabres can fix Greenway. Assuming a mid-late round pick or/and low-level prospect is the return, the value is probably fair, although Greenway’s 3-year, $9 million extension that lasts through 2025 means there’s a decent price to pay if the Sabres can’t turn his trajectory around.

As for who the Wild got:
The Wild make sure they don’t lose any depth by acquiring the physical Sundqvist who can play center and the wing (although he’s not good on face-offs).
JVR to DET
This seems like a weird fit. Detroit sells Filip Hronek and Tyler Bertuzzi only to add James van Riemsdyk, a good but not great rental forward who you’d think would be a perfect sheltered third-line scoring forward and second PP guy on a contender. He’s still good and drives play, but odd that Detroit is the team that gets him. Well, probably gets him.
