Buccaneers plan to cut veteran running back Leonard Fournette when new league year starts

The Buccaneers have been trending downward ever since last year started. It was inevitable the Bucs would become bad again. After Tom Brady retired, the downfall has continued to become worse. Now start running back Leonard Fournette is expected to be cut by the Buccaneers when the new league year begins. Via Tom Pelissero on Twitter.

The 28-year-old still seems to have plenty left in his gas tank. In the 2023 season, Fournette recorded 1,191 yards of total offense. He had 668 rushing yards and 523 receiving yards as well as six total touchdowns. Three rushing and three receiving touchdowns as well.

When the Buccaneers cut the former LSU tiger, they’re expected to save around $4 million in cap space while carrying a bit of dead money. Fournette was set to become a free agent in 2025, as his three-year deal worth $21 million will expire.

Fournette played a crucial role for the Buccaneers during his entire time in Tampa Bay. He essentially resurrected his career with them after being released from Jacksonville. In his Super Bowl run with Tom Brady in 2020, Fournette earned the nickname of “Playoff Lenny” and “Lombardi Lenny” for his heroics during the playoffs. During that 2020 Super Bowl run with the Buccaneers, Fournette had almost 500 total yards of offense and four touchdowns in only four games. In that span, Fournette also fumbled zero times.

It will be interesting to see where Leonard Fournette ends up, as the veteran running back still looks like a starting caliber RB at his age. Even with his previous injury concerns, Fournette would be a great addition to any backfield.
