Florida QB Anthony Richardson is in new contention for first overall pick odds in upcoming NFL Draft
The sports betting world has unlocked a new competitor for the first overall pick in this year’s draft, and his name is Anthony Richardson.
Richardson’s betting odds for the first overall pick have skyrocketed in the past week on Caesars Sportsbook.
In the 2023 NFL draft, the Chicago Bears have the first overall pick and many people have speculated that they trade Justin Fields and select a new QB. That quarterback could be Anthony Richardson, the 21-year-old Florida Gator.
In just this past week, Richardson’s odds for No. 1 overall have dropped from +8000 to just +800. That was similar to last year’s first overall pick Travon Walker out of Georgia. Before the week of the 2022 NFL Draft, Walker was at +220 and then he dropped down to as low as -420 on some sites. We could be potentially seeing a Travon Walker scenario this year with Richardson.
Richardson accumulated 26 total touchdowns last year for the Gators and threw for around 2,500 yards. He also added almost 700 yards with his legs. On the downside, Richardson threw nine interceptions in last year’s campaign.
The Gainesville, Florida, native is seen as a very raw product with extreme arm talent and rushing ability, but his other elements need to be polished up in the NFL. Richardson reminds me of a young Josh Allen at Wyoming, a very raw but physically gifted quarterback.
People betting on the first overall pick should always proceed with caution, as it is usually likely that NFL general managers sendoff mixed signals regarding who they’re drafting. In this case, it could be Richardson. But Las Vegas, the betting capital of the world, tends to know their stuff around draft time. Plus, these odds could change at any moment, especially with the NFL combine coming around the corner.
