Legendary Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops is back for the second time in the XFL
As the XFL finally relaunches after a few years of dormancy, former Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops is back in the saddle for the Arlington Renegades and says it really works for him, according to 247Sports.
Stoops stepped down as the OU head coach before the Sooners’ 2017 season. Stoops won 191 games with the Sooners in his 18-year career in Oklahoma. He led them to 10 Big 12 titles and a national championship in his time with the Sooners.
He later went onto become the Dallas Renegades head coach in 2020. In his first XFL season, Stoops won two games in a shortened five game season with the Renegades. They canceled the season in 2020 due to the outbreak of COVID-19.
“This fits me perfectly,” Stoops said this week on SportsCenter, via 247sports. “It’s a 10-week regular season, one playoff game and a championship game. The proximity to my home in Norman, Oklahoma, works for my family and I,” said Stoops. “And let’s face it — I don’t have to go into a compliance meeting after practice. I don’t have to go into an academic meeting, I don’t have to go into a recruiting meeting. All I get to do is coach football and be on the field, and that’s what I love to do.”
After his brief stay with the Arlington Renegades in 2020, Stoops had interest from several teams before returning to Oklahoma for a brief time with the Sooners in the Alamo Bowl after coach Lincoln Riley left for USC. Nebraska was one of the squads looking for a new mad in charge, but Stoops had no interest.
“I’ve been asked still to go back and do what I did before at different schools and it’s just not what I want to do at this point in my life,” Stoops said, via 247sports. “I’m enjoying this and, again, it’s a period of time through the year that really fits my schedule and I love working with these guys. Also, I’ve got a great staff. I love working with the coaching staff I’ve got. And so, all of that really works for me.”
In his first game back in the XFL, Stoops led the Arlington Renegades to a close fought 22-20 win over the Vegas Vipers. The Renegades next game is on Sunday, Feb. 26 against the Houston Roughnecks.
