Creator of PlayStation’s Logo Sound has Died.
The creator of one of gaming’s most iconic sound effects, Tohru Okada, has passed away. He was 73.
Okada, known for his work with Sony and PlayStation as well as with his rock band the Moonriders, ensured that the world would recognize the console brand for decades to come, all from one little soundbite.
Sounds for PlayStation
The soundbite Okada composed is precise, striking and extremely recognizable. It instantly draws in the attention of the listener and ensures people who hear the piece knows exactly what it’s for. There are dozens of parts that have continued to bring Sony’s console the recognition it’s received for the past decades, with the soundbite being one of the most notable ones.
But Okada’s work with PlayStation didn’t end with just that. He also went on to compose music for the console’s early big star, Crash Bandicoot, or more specifically, the commercials for the game, which also helped catapult the brand into early stardom.
Other Works
Okada was responsible for composing and preforming hundreds of pieces throughout his life. As well as this Okada would found the rock band Moonriders, to which he would play keyboard for even up till his death. The band had planned for concerts in April of this year, though said events have since been cancelled as the band wishes to take time to mourn Okada.
A Legacy of Sound
Okada’s life was built up and around by sound, from music to simple soundbites. While his most iconic work isn’t all that impressive in a purely artistic view, it helped give rise to one of the most successful brands in history. The PlayStation and the music world ought to give thanks to Tohru Okada and his works.
