Jim Caldwell Gives Up Pursuit Of Another NFL Head Coaching Job

Jim Caldwell has waved the white flag. The former Colts and Lions head coach has stopped pursuing any additional head coaching jobs. Now with Carolina as a senior assistant for new head coach Frank Reich, Caldwell spoke about how he’s done trying to get another head coaching job.

VIA ESPN:

“Right now, the only job that I’m concerned about is the job I do here, right here and now,” the former Indianapolis Colts and Detroit Lions head coach said on Tuesday. “I’m not worried about the future or anything else. I don’t plan on being a head coach from this point forward.”

“When I didn’t get a head-coaching job, I immediately sort of changed the plan in terms of what I was looking for next,” Caldwell said. “I knew I was at the stage where I wanted to be back in the building somewhere.

“And so, I did have some opportunities to kind of look at, and I was happy when Frank called.”

Caldwell, 68, last held a head coaching position with Detroit in 2017. He also won a Super Bowl as an assistant on Tony Dungy’s staff with the Colts. Caldwell sports a head coaching record of 62-50, but Peyton Manning has a lot to do with that. Manning threw 55 touchdowns one year with Adam Gase as his coordinator sooooo.

Caldwell was fired the following season.

I know some people are going to throw a pity party for Caldwell, but he’s a terrible playcaller. Easily the worst playcaller the Ravens have had during their franchise history. Caldwell was in charge of the most predictable 2013 Ravens offense. An offense that I shouted out all of the plays while watching on the coach.

First down – shotgun run for one yard.

Second down – out route that goes nowhere.

Third down – pray Flacco doesn’t do something dumb on a 50-50 ball.

Flacco’s worst season as a pro came with Caldwell as his coordinator. Flacco sported a 19-22 TD to INT ratio that year and Caldwell was let go by the next year.
