Resident Evil 7: Biohazard was a refreshing take on the popular Resident Evil franchise. A game that turned the typical formula on its head and delivered an interesting new way to experience the series. But the game we got wasn’t the first project to bear the title of Resident Evil 7.
In fact, news has come out about a previous, canceled version of the game featuring all sorts of ideas and concepts that could have also created an interesting and captivating new way to play the game.
According to credible leaker and insider AestheticGamer, the original version of Resident Evil 7 was supposed to be similar to Resident Evil 6, with characters Leon S. Kennedy and Sherry Birkin fighting off mutants and zombies in another fictional city — this time based off Venice, Italy — and the game’s bioweapon of the month having been water focused.
But more importantly, the game would have taken elements of Telltale Games’ player choice, allowing players to interact with, and decide the fates of, their characters more than ever before. Certainly, an interesting idea and concept for the series at the time.
According to AestheticGamer, Capcom created an hour-long demo of the game back in 2012-13 before the project was canned in favor of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard.
Ultimately, however, the version of Resident Evil 7 we got was probably for the best. The series needed to return to its horror roots as opposed to continuing down the action game pathway. Between Biohazard and later Resident Evil: Village the franchise has seen a considerable revival, one that is expected to continue so long as these horror roots are addressed.
