James Wiseman traded to Pistons in three-team deal
James Wiseman has been traded to the Detroit Pistons in a three-team deal involving the Golden State Warriors and Atlanta Hawks. NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski laid out the official terms of the trade:
Saddiq Bey is on his way to Atlanta as part of the trade. The Warriors receive five second-round picks in return for the former No. 2 overall pick.
The James Wiseman experiment is officially over in Golden State. Wiseman was a top prospect coming out of Memphis in 2020. Despite a reputation of being injury-prone, the Warriors took a chance on him by drafting him ahead LaMelo Ball and Tyrese Haliburton. Both have appeared in an All-Star game.
Wiseman missed his entire sophomore season with a knee injury. He’s only appeared in 60 games in his first three seasons in the NBA. He has shown spurts of potential in the past, but availability is a real issue. If he can stay on the court, Detroit may have found themselves a new big man for years to come.
Detroit took Bey with the 19th pick of the 2020 draft. He made the 2020-21 All-Rookie team. He’s a flashy scorer out of the forward position. His career 40.0 field goal percent is nothing to boast of, as Bey has built a reputation for bad shot selection, but he should benefit in an offense run by Trae Young and Dejounte Murray, two of the best facilitators in the league who excel at generates good shots for teammates.
Five second-round picks seems to be a fair return on investment for Wiseman for the Warriors, since nobody knows what his potential is yet. Those picks either give Golden State five chances to find a diamond in the rough in the second round or some trade value to work with in the offseason. Whichever way they choose, it’s clear the Warriors ran out of patience on a risky player like Wiseman.
