Rangers Acquire Vladimir Tarasenko
It’s NBA trade deadline day and the NHL just said hold my beer. The New York Rangers are on the verge of acquiring Blues winger Vladimir Tarasenko. A huge move for the Rangers to help bolster their scoring prowess.
Frank Seravalli of the Daily Faceoff was the first to report the deal:
Tarasenko, 31, has been solid again for the Blues in 2022-23. He’s still creating a lot of chances and finding the back of the net. Tarasenko has 29 points in 38 games. Yes, he’s an injury risk but this is still a quality NHL player that will find a way to score when surrounded by this talent. The underlying numbers are positive for the most part.
Tarasenko has been on the trade block for a long time. Two years ago, you probably could have gotten picks just for taking him on. Tarasenko rebounded in a big way last year pocketing 82 points along the way. The Blues were desperate to find a taker and then Tarasenko rebounded making it difficult to find a trade partner. He also carries an AAV of $7.5 million with 2022-23 being the final year of the deal. It stands to reason that St. Louis retained some salary in order to get this trade done.
The last time the Rangers and Blues made a trade, St. Louis got the much better side by acquiring Pavel Buchnevich for Sammy Blais. St. Louis would love to have that one back.
Update: This is the full details of the trade. Seems like a hefty package for the Rangers to give up on the surface. Getting the Blues to take back Blais may have something to do with it.
