Lurie: Hurts deserving of contract extension, doesn’t need to prove anything

In the eyes of the Philadelphia Eagles, Jalen Hurts’ progression over the past three years warrants discussion of a contract extension, according to team CEO Jeffrey Lurie.

Hurts has led the Eagles to their fourth Super Bowl appearance in franchise history this year. The same quarterback benched by Nick Saban in the 2018 College Football National Championship now prepares to face Patrick Mahomes in Super Bowl LVII on Sunday. Regardless of the outcome, Hurts is the Eagles’ franchise quarterback of the future and doesn’t have anything left to prove, per Lurie.

Hurts’ Career Progression

With Super Bowl 57 less than a week away, much of the spotlight is on Philadelphia quarterback Jalen Hurts. The 24-year-old quarterback elevated to an MVP-caliber player in his third year in the NFL. Including playoffs, Hurts has accumulated a 16-1 record as a starter in 2022.

Even though his career started with a lot of doubt, Hurts has consistently answered his critics. He will have a chance to answer them once more if he can lead his team to victory against the Chiefs.

A second-round pick in 2020, Hurts began his career as a backup to Carson Wentz. The team won only four games and fired their head coach Doug Pederson. At that time, Hurts had the persona and image of being the quarterback who got benched for Tua Tagovailoa in the National Championship game.

Since the start of last season, Hurts has been nothing but consistent in his gameplay. Hurts deserves a lot of credit for being a stabilizing leader, allowing the Eagles to rebuild their team as fast as they did — a successful one at that considering the team is preparing for the Super Bowl this Sunday.

Eagles CEO All-In on Hurts’ Future

Jalen Hurts has established himself as the face of the Eagles franchise not just to NFL fans, but to Lurie, too. When asked about Hurts’ potential contract extension on Monday at Super Bowl LVII opening night, Lurie responded with much excitement.

“I don’t think he has anything to prove,” he said, via ESPN. “He is an MVP-caliber quarterback, an incredible leader of the team on the field, off the field. He’s 24 years old, incredibly mature and, most importantly, driven to be even better. What we’re seeing today I think is just the beginning for Jalen. This guy will attack every weakness as he has since high school, since college. The future is bright and very exciting for all of us.”

Winning the Super Bowl would only help Hurts in further contract extension discussions. But regardless of the result, Hurts is the Eagles franchise quarterback whether he wins or loses this Sunday.
