‘We’re moving on’: Naughty Dog seemingly closes the chapter on Uncharted series
In an interview with Buzzfeed published on Jan. 25, Naughty Dog co-president Neil Druckmann announced that the company was “moving on” from Uncharted. The popular and award-winning adventure series is being set aside in favor of continued work on more The Last of Us products.
Shifting Priorities
Since the last major Uncharted release in 2016, there has been little news regarding the series. An Uncharted movie was released back in 2022, but it received mixed reviews. Regardless, the film made over $400 million at the box office.
The series has been very successful, and Druckmann claims that’s reason enough to stop work on it.
“Uncharted 4 was one of our best-selling games, and we’re able to put our final brushstroke on that story and say that we’re done,” Druckmann said. “We’re moving on.”
Meanwhile, Naughty Dog has been spending more and more effort and time with The Last of Us. With two games and a TV show on HBO, the action-adventure series has clearly taken the priority over Uncharted. With a season two now confirmed by HBO, The Last of Us’ success will continue to be Naughty Dog’s main project going forward.
Is Adventure Still Out There?
While Druckmann has stated that work on the Uncharted series is over, there is still speculation as to if he meant Nathan Drake’s story, or the whole series. For now, it seems as if the legendary Uncharted series has finally gone dormant.
Only time will tell whether or not Uncharted, under a new protagonist perhaps, will return. But for the fans of the series, the call for adventure is still there. The temples, ruins, and treasures still waiting to be uncovered. They just need Naughty Dog to help guide them there.
