Ravens, Greg Roman agree to part ways
The Baltimore Ravens and offensive coordinator Greg Roman have mutually agreed to part ways prior to the start of next season, as first reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Roman has seen immense success with the Ravens since taking over as offensive coordinator. He has helped them earn playoff berth in three of the last four seasons, while creating one of the more dynamic offenses we’ve seen to date.
When Roman was hired back in 2019, Baltimore’s offense was a mess, boasting no real identity as a unit lead by a young Lamar Jackson. The offense could’ve collapsed right there, but Roman simply viewed it as another challenge.
Roman immediately revamped the Ravens’ offense, turning them into one of the best running teams in league history. In 2019, Baltimore set the record for most rushing yards in a season at 3,216. That year also saw the unit set records for quarterback rushing yards in a season (1,206) and a record for most consecutive games with over 100 rushing yards (43).
All these accomplishments led to Roman being named the assistant coach of the year in 2019 and it’s pretty clear to see why. Rather than coming in and trying to make a new quarterback adjust to your system, Roman realized it would be easier to instead work around the strengths of Jackson.
In the former Louisville star, he knew he had an extremely athletic playmaker who is difficult to bring down in the open field. As a result, Roman created an offense that would allow Jackson to do just that — it worked wonders too, seeing as Jackson won the MVP in 2019 as well.
However, as of recently, it seemed like the Greg Roman magic was starting to fade. His abilities as a play caller were really put to the test after Jackson went out for basically the second half of the season. Despite the great work Roman has shown he could do, the task of dealing with Tyler Huntley under center was just too much apparently.
Despite the more recent struggles, I still expect Roman to find a job pretty soon. He’s a guy who has shown that he can create a winning style of offense and can work with the pieces he has around him. I know Ravens fans have disliked him for a bit now, and it’s possible that his “system” is a bit outdated, also struggling to attract top-end receiving talent.
But Ravens fans shouldn’t forget that this man took an offense that had no identity and turned them into the greatest running team of all time. I know that alone isn’t everything but man, it sure does mean something to me.
Somebody is going to take the shot on Greg Roman and I think they will be better off because of it.
