Bayern Munich Sign Goalkeeper Yann Sommer

Bayern Munich has been searching for a replacement for the injured Manuel Neuer and they have finally found their man. Yann Sommer was signed by the German titans on Thursday from Borussia Mönchengladbach, per a statement made by Bayern Munich.

The 34-year-old Sommer has agreed to a contract that will keep him in Munich through June 2025. He has been called upon to replace the void left by Neuer after the star broke his leg in a skiing accident. The injury took place in December but will keep Neuer out for the remainder of the season.

Sommer is a great fit for Bayern because he has been playing in the Bundesliga since 2014 and is one of the best goalkeepers in the league, which was recognized by the Bayern board.

“Yann Sommer is a valuable reinforcement because he is internationally very experienced and knows the Bundesliga as well for many years,” club CEO Oliver Kahn said.

During his time with Borussia Mönchengladbach, Sommer made 272 appearances while being named to the 2019-20 Bundesliga team of the season. He was also named the Swiss player of the year three times with the latest being in 2021.

For Switzerland, Sommer was a key in making it to the knockout stage of the 2022 World Cup. He was also essential in getting to the quarterfinals of the 2020 European Championships.

“I’m very excited about the new challenge at FC Bayern,” Sommer said in the club’s statement. “It’s a big, powerful club. We’ve played against each other many times … I’m proud that I’m now a part of FC Bayern. We have some big challenges ahead of us.”

As far as Bayern are concerned, they are replacing one world-class goalkeeper with another. This signing will be important if Bayern wants to win an 11th straight Bundesliga title.

They return to action against Red Bull Leipzig on Friday in the first match since the 2022 World Cup concluded, and Yann Sommer could be included in the squad.
