Draymond Green Ponders Future With The Warriors

Draymond Green is prepared to move on from the Warriors, breaking up their dynasty. After ten years of the Steph, Klay, Draymond core which won four championships including last year might be over due to Draymond Green’s contract coming to an end after this year. Draymond Green is coming off a four-year $100 million deal. With Jordan Poole and Andrew Wiggins getting contract extensions it puts the Warriors in a position where they have to focus on keeping good youth around Steph Curry. Draymond is very much aware of the situation and had this to say about the Dub’s future.

“If you don’t get to know the business, then you can be blindsided and be like, ‘Oh, man, everything I’ve done there. I thought I’d be there forever.’ I would love to be. I understand the luxury tax. I understand you got these young guys and contracts up, and they have to get paid. Like, I understand all of those things. And so, just for me, that’s what I mean by the writings on the wall.”

With there being “writing on the wall” what teams would be the best fit for Draymond and what team wants to pay Draymond? Draymond has made it clear that he believes he’s worth another big contract as he tweeted this response to the ongoing conversations last year about the possibility of extending Andrew Wiggins and Jordan Poole.

When it comes to Green as a player, he is one of the most unique players the NBA has seen and is a pioneer for the undersized versatile defensive big man. In some eyes including mine, he is a future hall-of-fame player who changed how the game is played with the short roll to the elbow offensively. On defense, he is able to keep up with guards and is able to funnel other bigs into double teams.

With all of this being said Draymond Green is not a flashy player on the stat sheet and is definitely a highly valued role player. When Steph Curry broke his hand and was out for the majority of the season, Green struggled to find his place with a Curry and Klay Thompson-less Warriors team. Green feeds off offensive stars and can be looked at to be a leader defensively where he led the Warriors’ defense to the number one defense last year.

In Jarrod Prosser’s NBA All-Decade Awards part 2 he showed his praise for Green giving him the All-Decade defensive player of the year. Prosser talks about how Draymond is the best 2-on-1 defender. Being able to pick up two players off a pick-and-roll is extremely important when you have Jordan Poole who is a horrible defender.

It is without a doubt that Green impacts the game like no other defensively. The problem will be, what team wants to pay a 32-year-old Draymond Green, and will he even thrive being out of the Warriors system?
