I won’t lie to you, I was actually nervous. I’ve been fading the Mets hardcore, but what if I was wrong? Signing Carlos Correa was a big deal and I wasn’t going to pretend otherwise.
Now? Without Correa after we have learned that he’s heading to Minnesota instead? It absolutely matters and the Mets are probably back to being a third-place team again. Correa was supposed to represent that elite infielder acquisition to counterbalance what Philadelphia did adding Trea Turner. Now? The same problem still exists. Unless Brett Batty is a superstar in 2023, you’re back to being average at third base. Eduardo Escobar only can do so much.
Correa, 28, is a true aircraft carrier in the sport. Correa was a 5.4 WAR player in 2022 providing elite defense while posting a 140 OPS+. So yeah, that guy moves the needle. He also would have stepped onto the field and immediately become the Mets player. So yeah, that guy moves the needle.
Without Correa, I am back on the side that the Mets will regret the roster moves they have made. The Mets have gotten into bodybuilding injecting themselves with a lion dosage of steroids but opt to skip leg day every week. The young foundation has not been built and too many resources have been wasted for me to take this team super seriously as a world series contender.
The Braves have won the NL East for five consecutive years. My question is without Correa, how much better are they than a year ago? Justin Verlander has swapped spots with Jacob deGrom. Ditto for Kodai Senga and Chris Bassist. What else is different? If it’s the same old Mets in 2023, it’s likely because they missed out on the mega talent that truly could have changed their ceiling.
