NFL announces Bengals-Bills game won’t be played this week
The NFL announced Tuesday that following the Damar Hamlin situation, the Bengals/Bills game will not be made up at any point this week. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport also revealed that no discussions have been had on resuming the game at an even later date.
This news seems almost trivial given the events that transpired last night. Right now, all anybody cares about is the health and recovery of Hamlin. The Buffalo Bills have released a report stating that he spent the night at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where he remains in critical condition.
Despite the grim nature of the situation, it’s clear that Hamlin has the full support of the NFL community. After Hamlin was taken to the hospital both teams’ players and fans gathered outside in unison to recite a prayer. It was a truly beautiful scene during a moment that was so scary for many.
During all this, social media actually served a beneficial use and found a toy foundation started by Hamlin himself. The GoFundMe, “Chasing M’s,” had a fundraising goal of $2,500. As of this morning, it has raised over $4 million worth of donations.
Support was also rampant on Twitter, so much so that every NFL team’s Twitter account changed their profile picture to a “Pray for Damar” image with his number.
It goes without saying that you should have Hamlin and his family in your thoughts and prayers right now. I can’t imagine what his family is going through and I can only hope that he makes a full and speedy recovery. This is a violent game and I think we as fans sometimes forget that.
The decision to seemingly cancel the game would be the right one. I don’t know how you can expect a player from either team to come back and finish that game like nothing happened. The focus right now is and should be on the health of Damar Hamlin. Until more information is released on that, the rescheduling of this game can wait.
