Zach Wilson is Inactive for Jets Game Sunday

Someone needs to tell Zach Wilson that life moves fast. Not only will Mike White replace him as the starter against the Bears this weekend, but he will also be off the roster entirely, according to Jets coach Robert Saleh.

After his astonishingly foolish quote following the Jets’ 10-3 loss in New England, it seems like there will be some repercussions. Adam Schefter first reported the impending shift under center, but Jets SNY beat writer Connor Hughes soon reported the decision from Saleh below:

It’s been a terrible week after an equally terrible game for Wilson against the Patriots last Sunday.

Look, you can cut it both ways here. Wilson is not doing himself any favors as he tries to prove to be the Jets franchise quarterback. But the Jets also botched their end of it. Whether it’s from a coaching or managerial perspective, they did not put Wilson in the greatest chance to succeed. The stats don’t tell the full story here. Yes, he is 5-2 in seven starts this season, but, as Matt Hanifan astutely pointed out, New York is winning in spite of Wilson’s performances, rather than because of them.

And those two losses, you ask? Both against the Patriots. Bill Belichick exposed all of Wilson’s deficiencies in their two matchups. It got so ugly that Wilson threw a combined 29-for-63 (46.0%) with three interceptions at MetLife and Foxborough.

There was a quiet chorus of Jets fans clamoring for the team to re-evaluate their situation at quarterback. Now, it has become the overwhelming majority of the fanbase. The fallout from Wilson’s comments is nothing short of atomic.

Between a rock and a hard place

The Jets defense actually looks legit. In hindsight, the Patriots are lucky that the New York special teams pulled a vintage Jets moment out in the final seconds. But this offense, much like the crosstown Giants, looks to be in trouble.

So, what does that mean for Joe Douglas? Where does he go from here? Does he, or even Saleh, deserve to go out the door for his handling of this situation? Trey made a great point about this only yesterday:

So, who becomes the Jets’ new “savior?” If Baltimore fumbles the bag, does New York make a play for Lamar Jackson? If Arizona decides to blow it up, does Kyler Murray pop up on their radar? Or will they pick Plan C? Probably the worse of them all? Decide to punt on the best season they’ve had in half a decade and decide to tank for a higher draft pick? Surely it could not happen right? Well folks, this is the Jets. Sadly, anything is possible.
