2022 Fantasy Football Breakout Candidates: Week 8

We are in Week 8 of the 2022 NFL season, which begins Thursday evening between the Baltimore Ravens and the reeling Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who have dropped four of their last five games. Nevertheless, it’s not the worst primetime matchup this season — especially given what we’ve had over the last few weeks — but I digress. While you’re making your bets, waiting to see if Mark Andrews is playing or finishing your final transactions for the week, let’s jump into possible Week 8 fantasy football breakout candidates. How’d we do in Week 7?

After one of our best weeks, we had one of our worst. Whew. Let’s get back on track in Week 8. Let’s jump into it!

Jared Goff, QB, Detroit Lions

Goff got off to a hot start to kickoff the 2022 season, but has yet to throw a touchdown to three interceptions in his last two games against two above average secondaries in New England and Dallas — both on the road. Now, Goff returns to Ford Field against a limited Dolphin secondary. Assuming D’Andre Swift and Amon-Ra St. Brown are active, expect Goff to have a breakout week against Miami.

Irv Smith Jr., TE, Minnesota Vikings

With bye weeks in flux, Smith is a good tight end to pick up if you’re in need of one. He hasn’t necessarily had the season that some of us (myself included) expected him to have. He’s only had more than four receptions in a single game just once this season; in his last outing against the Miami in Week 6, Smith caught four passes for a touchdown, but only totaled seven targets. In what could be a high-scoring shootout on Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals (now that Hopkins is back), Smith could be in-line for another double-figure scoring week.

Jonathan Taylor, RB, Indianapolis Colts

Since his 31-carry, 161-yard, one-touchdown rushing effort Week 1, Taylor has totaled 225 yards on 3.8 yards per carry without a touchdown. It was a struggle with Matt Ryan behind center; it might even be a struggle with backup Sam Ehlinger as the presumptive signal caller for the rest of the season. But one thing we do know is that he’ll get plenty of carries. He’s too talented of a back to get held down forever. It’s a gamble, but I’m buying Taylor stock to break out this week at home against Washington.

Courtland Sutton, WR, Denver Broncos

After recording at least five catches for 50 yards in his first five games, Sutton‘s logged just five catches for 37 yards combined over the last two weeks. After a one-week absence, Russell Wilson appears ready to go for the Week 8 affair in London against Jacksonville. Expect Sutton to get back on track Sunday.
