Calen Addison: Fantasy Hockey Deep Sleeper?

What should we make of the Minnesota Wild this year? It’s a team in cap hell along and forced them to lose Kevin Fiala this offseason. The Wild have more questions than answers on this roster outside of Kirill Kaprizov. The young guns in Minnesota are going to have to step up and it appears one is already doing just that. Calen Addison may be a name you want to target for you fantasy hockey team.

VIA Daily Faceoff:

“Never say never, but it appears that the youngster, Addison, will start the year quarterbacking the first power play unit for the Wild. And that means prolific attachment to the likes of Kirill Kaprizov and Matt Boldy. In 18 career NHL games, Addison has registered two goals and four points.”

Oh? Say less! Quarterbacking the power play with Kaprizoz? It’s already hard enough finding defensemen that score reliable fantasy points. Anybody with first duty power play duties has value. In Minnesota on a playoff team? This is a dart throw everyone should be taking if they have holes at defensemen.

I don’t blame the Wild for taking this experiment. Addison, 22, is a former second round pick by the Penguins in 2018. Addison was part of the trade that sent Jason Zucker to Pittsburgh. If Addison can turn into a reliable defenseman in Minnesota, that’s a damn good trade by Billy Guerin. Minnesota also got another first round pick in that deal back in 2020 too.

Just keep an eye on it. Since I’ve been doing fantasy hockey, Jared Surgeon, Matt Dumba, and Jonas Brodin have all failed to do anything more than mediocre fantasy options. If Addison can break through, maybe that trend can change. Don’t expect the world but if you’re desperate, maybe think about giving this dart throw a shot.
