It was a big day for CD Projekt Red as the company announced the development of numerous new games, including a report of a new Witcher trilogy. The announcement came in a thread on Twitter Monday.
The more Witcher, the better. Simple as that. If you have never played the games, then I beg you to do so. The first and second games have aged, but The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is a classic and is tied with The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion as my favorite game of all time.
What I am most curious about is who will the players be playing as. Geralt’s story ended with The Witcher 3, and his end depended on the choices you made in the game. While it would be cool to have your saves carry over and impact the start of the next game, that seems like an impossible task.
The more logical conclusions are either CD Projekt Red picks one of those endings as canon, or we play as someone other than Geralt. Besides, we don’t know if this series will be a direct sequel to the previous trilogy. It could be set before or after with all new characters. I’d love to be able to make my own Witcher, similar to how CD Projekt Red approached the creation of V in Cyberpunk 2077.
Fans of the Witcher series should be excited by this news. CD Projekt Red’s reputation took a hit with the release of Cyberpunk, but it seems to have recovered since then. If the devs can learn their lesson from previous mistakes, this new trilogy could be one for the ages.
