Patrick Corbin is Having One of the Worst Seasons Ever
Everyone in the baseball world is familiar with the popular 20-game winner — a trademark of a great pitcher. There’s the direct opposite too — the ultra-rare 20-game loser. There hasn’t been one since 2003, and the last one before that was in 1980. Patrick Corbin may join that list in 2022.
We live in a time where wins and losses don’t precisely determine the actual ability of a great starting pitcher. Unfortunately, the Nationals lefthander is not only on the verge of losing 20 games but also posting one of the worst earned run averages of all time.
As of Aug. 29, Patrick Corbin is 5-17 with a 6.56 ERA. His FIP is 4.97 and WHIP is 1.762. This trend of poor pitching has been going on since 2020 when he led the league in hits allowed (85). 2021 was no better, leading the majors in losses at 16 with a 5.82 ERA.
It is really odd to think at one point Corbin was once considered one of the top pitchers in baseball. Corbin was finished top-five in Cy Young voting in 2018 as a member of the Diamondbacks. The next season he was one of the pitchers who led the Nationals to their first World Series title.
It’s been downhill since, and the Nationals seem to be stuck with the lefthander. He is under contract until 2024. Corbin is one of the last remaining pieces from the World Championship team, one that’s currently 43-85 and in the midst of a massive rebuild.
If Corbin raised his ERA by 0.02, he’d join the top 10 list of worst ERAs throughout a season. It’s sad to see a previously dominant pitcher undergo such a transition to the bottom of the barrel.
“I want to leave this year with a positive moving forward to next year,” Nationals manager Dave Martinez told Andrew Golden of the Washington Post. “Because, regardless of what anyone thinks, he’s going to be one of our starters next year and the year after that.”
There is hope for a turnaround, he is after all only 32 years of age. Something worked for Patrick Corbin once and he just has to find it again.
