Vincent Trocheck is swapping metro squads. After losing to them in the second round, the former Hurricanes center is signing a seven-year deal with the New York Rangers. The salary is roughly $5.625 million per season. Chris Drury has found an answer to his issues down the middle with the veteran center. The Blueshirts are looking pretty good down the middle with Trocheck, Zibanejad, and Filip Chytil.

A Feisty Swap

Vincent Trocheck could see how the Rangers play firsthand. That’s because he was on the Hurricanes during their grueling seven game series that ended in a tough loss at home. Now, he is filling the void that Andrew Copp and Ryan Strome left in their top six. It’s a good add for the Rangers, as Trocheck is solid in both ends and can score at a reasonable clip. However, it remains to be seen who will be on his wing. There is no shortage of options, with the likes of Chris Kreider, Artemi Panarin, Alexis Lafreniere, and Kaapo Kakko all in the mix.

The Canes Move On

It has been a wild offseason for Carolina. Despite it only being a few hours old, they already replaced Tony Deangelo for Brent Burns. Then, they nearly picked up Mason Marchment to replace Trocheck. As well, it would not be a surprise to see some bad blood between Trocheck and his former team. After all, it was a physical and personal second-round series that took place. Furthermore, no team can hold a grudge quite like the Hurricanes. Whether it’s with their social media people, Jesperi Kotkaniemi and the Canadiens, or the aforementioned Deangelo, they run to smoke rather than away from it.

The Right Building Block On Broadway?

No one can deny that Trocheck is still a good player. However, the Rangers are still a young team. Signing a 29-year-old to a seven-year deal is risky business. Especially when you want them to be a top-six center. In my opinion, bringing back Andrew Copp made a lot of sense. However, the Rangers clearly did not think so. It’ll be a tall order to repeat the success they had last year, but not impossible. Drury obviously thinks that Trocheck will be a guy who can help them do that. In all honesty, the hockey world may not agree. However, free agency and signing deals is also the time when we can now do nothing but wait.
