Baker Mayfield Believes He and the Browns are ‘Ready to Move On’

It appears as if Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield and the Cleveland Browns are ready to part ways, at least according to him.

While speaking to a youth football camp in Norman, Okla., this is what Mayfield said regarding whether he would step onto the field with Deshaun Watson’s availability in question ahead of the 2022 season:

“No, I think for that to happen, there would have to be some reaching out,” he said. “But we’re ready to move on, I think, on both sides.”

The Browns traded for Deshaun Watson and promptly extended him for a five-year deal for a record-setting $230 million, fully guaranteed. Though there remains obvious uncertainty for how long Watson – who’s recently settled 20 of his 24 lawsuits against him regarding sexual misconduct – will be suspended. Josh Dobbs and Jacoby Brissett, who the Browns signed this offseason, are the only other quarterbacks on the roster.

With his fifth-year option exercised, the former No. 1 overall pick is in the final year of his rookie contract, worth about $18.9 million, per Spotrac. Mayfield voiced his frustrations about not getting traded before minicamp, but highlighted that it was out of his control.

“I think I got frustrated with it not happening before minicamp and all those things, but it’s just the stuff that’s out of my control,” he said. “And so, you know, let those things happen and fall in place.”

Last season, despite playing through a torn labrum for part of the season, Mayfield still started 14 games. He completed 60.5 percent of his passes for 3,010 yards, 17 touchdowns (career low), and 13 interceptions. Over his four-year career, he’s completed 61.6 percent of his attempts, tossing for 14,125 yards, 92 touchdowns to 56 interceptions in 60 contests (59 starts).

In 2020, Mayfield had arguably the best year of his career under then-first-year head coach Kevin Stefanski. Mayfield threw for 3,563 yards with a 62.8 completion percentage, sporting a 26:8 touchdown-to-interception ratio. He also posted career-bests in passer rating (95.9) and QBR (65.5). Mayfield helped lead the Browns to their first playoff win since 1994, finishing the regular season 11-5.

“I’m thankful for my four years in Cleveland, and had a lot of ups and downs and a ton of learning experiences that I will forever keep with me,” Mayfield said.
