Yu Darvish Simply Doesn’t Fear Tornadoes

Picture this: You are outside with a large group of people, maybe tossing the ball around. It starts to get really dark out, not because it is getting late but because there is a storm coming. Maybe a little lightning flashes but the thunder never strikes so you know It isn’t quite near yet, but it’s coming. All of the sudden, you hear this LOUD siren, alerting the folks that there is a tornado incoming and that everyone should seek shelter. You start to run inside and you look back out to where you were playing, and you see one person just standing there. That someone was Yu Darvish yesterday.

This happened yesterday between the Cubs and Padres game at Wrigley Field in Chicago. Rain originally pushed the start time back 30 mins, but people had concerns about an impending tornado.

Among those not concerned in the slightest was Darvish, who would remain on the field going through his pregame routine to get ready for his start. The video is surreal, to say the least, which was shot by Padres beat writer Kevin Acee.

Acee asked Yu Darvish after the game about his decision to not seek shelter with the rest of his teammates, and his response is classic.

“That was kind of a little bit of a sentimental moment for me.

The tornado warning came in and everybody left; the fans left the stands. It was a moment between myself and Wrigley Field.”

The decision to stay out during the siren and not let it phase him worked out well, as Yu Darvish would go on to pitch 8 innings and only give up one run to the Cubs in a 4-1 victory. A moment as legendary as this could land him on the Padres Mount Rushmore (I’m only mostly joking).
