Where Can I Play Resident Evil 2? Original Release, 2019 Remake

Resident Evil 2 was a survival horror masterpiece when released back in 1998. The Capcom release remains so even now, over two decades later, with its 2019 remake cementing one of the greatest horror games of all time.

The sequel transformed Capcom’s horror IP into a more expansive game. Resident Evil 2 presents a larger world and story than its predecessor. Thanks to Capcom’s dedication in preserving their roots and maintaining their history, it has never been easier to play Resident Evil 2.

Where to Play… Resident Evil 2 (Original Release)

The original 1998 Resident Evil 2 is available across multiple platforms. The easiest and cheapest way to play it is through the PlayStation 3 or PS Vita digital marketplace.

You can also play the game on consoles like the PS1, PSX, PS2, Gamecube/ Wii, Dreamcast, and Nintendo 64, but copies are harder and more expensive to come by.

RE 2 is also playable with PC emulation but be careful; one has to pay attention to what sources they’re using in order to avoid legal pitfalls and accidental piracy.

Where to Play… Resident Evil 2 (2019 Remake)

The acclaimed remake from 2019, featuring the over-the-shoulder gameplay seen in RE 4, is available on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows via Steam.

The Standard Edition generally costs $39.99 across platforms but for $10 more you can purchase Resident Evil 2 Deluxe Edition: a DLC package including additional costumes, weapons, and access to the original 1998 RE 2 soundtrack, if you’re feeling nostalgic.

The 2019 remake is also available on the PS5 and Xbox X/S through backwards compatibility, but it’s worth noting that enhanced versions are coming out for the next-gen consoles later this year.

Where to Play… Enhanced Versions?

Early in March 2022 Capcom announced that they are enhancing the Resident Evil 2 & 3 Remakes and VII: Biohazard for the PS5 and Xbox X/S.

The next-gen upgrade includes visual and audio enhancements like higher frame rates, 4K resolution, and even ray tracing. The enhancement is scheduled to come out later this year and will be free-of-charge for existing owners of any three games. Your save data will carry over between consoles as well as any pre-purchased DLC.

Capcom announced that alongside the console versions PC players will be given the enhancement update free of charge. With the amount of care Capcom is giving its franchise, everybody has a shot at playing these iconic horror thrillers.
