Cris Collinsworth has always been a guy to remember. Despite a short but successful playing career, the former wide receiver has carved out a very good spot on sports television. He is set to call his fifth Super Bowl alongside Al Michaels as NBC is gearing up for the February 13th matchup. However, it’s likely that this game will hit a little close to home for Cris. His entire playing career took place with the AFC Champion Cincinnati Bengals. In fact, Collinsworth even retired the year before Cinci made their last Super Bowl appearance in 1989. One can surely assume that he has a team to root for this year. One can also see that in both the short and long term, Collinsworth will be a busy man.
A Big Game To Look Forward To
The Bengals have never been a model of success. This year is the closest they’ve been to a championship in over three decades. After two close-fought losses to the San Francisco 49ers in the 1980s, there has been little to be excited for. Collinsworth was a small glimmer of hope, as he made the Pro Bowl in each of his first three seasons. However, there are not many better things after that. A fumble in Super Bowl XVI that set the Bengals back and ankle injuries were some tough pills to swallow.
While he must remain impartial in the broadcast booth, it’s hard not to assume there’s a clear favorite in his mind. He should still be more than happy for the team even being there. Great offseason moves like drafting Ja’Marr Chase and signing Trey Hendrickson will more than likely mean Joe Burrow and company will have plenty of bites at the apple.
A Busy Offseason Ahead
After the Super Bowl, Collinsworth will still have plenty on his mind. As Amazon is set to take over the rights to Thursday Night Football, they want to use NBC’s production team. Collinsworth is reportedly in negotiations with NBC over a $12.5 million a year deal that will keep him as their lead analyst through 2025. So, even if the Rams come out and defeat the Bengals, it can’t be that bad for him. Some fresh Ben Franklins will more than likely be sitting around if he needs to dry his tears. While the NFL Offseason is around the corner, Cris Collinsworth will have a lot to keep himself busy with.
