Jared Bernhardt Is Officially a Legend After Another Natty

If you know the name Jared Bernhardt, it’s likely for his extremely productive five-year lacrosse career at the University of Maryland. He won a national championship as a freshman and took home the 2021 Tewaaraton Award for the nation’s top lacrosse player. Bernhardt finished his collegiate lacrosse career as Maryland’s all-time leader in points, goals, single-season points, and single-season goals.

Jared was drafted with the 19th overall pick in the 2021 PLL Draft to the Chaos Lacrosse Club, but chose to forego this opportunity to play college football. He made this decision to honor his late father, who was a longtime football coach and director of player development. Jared committed to play football at Division II Ferris State and head coach Tony Annese. The Bulldogs run the triple option offense and the former Terrapin standout was a highly-regarded option quarterback in high school, so the fit made sense.

In his Ferris State debut, Bernhardt got off to a hot start, accounting for seven total touchdowns. There was no slowing down from there. The Bulldogs finished with a 14-0 record and won the DII National Championship over Valdosta State, 58-17. Over nine games this season, Bernhardt passed for over 1,300 yards and 11 touchdowns while rushing for over 1,200 yards and an astounding 23 touchdowns.

What Now?

What’s next for Jared Bernhardt? The PLL is probably still on the table, as is pursuing professional football. His brothers, Jesse and Jake, each play in the PLL while working as coaches for college teams. In the 2021 PLL Player Top 50 ranking, Jake came in as the No. 46 player while Jesse was listed as the No. 29 player. All three Bernhardt brothers were All-Americans for Maryland. Whatever comes next for Jared, his collegiate athletics resume is up there with the best of them.

Two national championships, for two different schools, in two different sports. Jared Bernhardt is a legend.
