Tennessee Football Fans Exhibit Classless Display in Loss

The Tennessee Volunteers (4-2, 2-1 SEC) faced off against No. 13 Ole Miss (4-1, 1-1 SEC) in a home matchup on Saturday night. After a 24-12 deficit at halftime, the Vols found themselves only down five with the ball and less than two minutes left on the clock. They nearly converted a 4th and 24, but the linesman spotted the ball short, leading to a turnover on downs with less than a minute to play. A video review kept the call right where it was. At that point, all hell broke loose and the Tennessee football fans could not keep themselves together.

The game was delayed by 20 minutes as Vols supporters rained down all types of debris from the stands following the unfavorable call. Vape pens, pizza boxes, beer cans, and even a mustard bottle found their way to the field. Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin was hit with a golf ball, which he decided to hold on to. The environment became so dangerous that the Tennessee cheerleaders and dance team had to evacuate. Earlier in the game, Vols fans cheered when Ole Miss quarterback and Heisman favorite Matt Corral went down with an injury. Overall, just a thoroughly classless display from the Tennessee football fans.

The Volunteers eventually got the ball back for one last play at the Ole Miss 21-yard line, but failed to make something happen before time expired. 31-26 was the final score in favor of the Rebels.

After the Game

As he was leaving the game, Lane Kiffin made a nice grab of a water bottle headed directly for his head. He decided to throw something back, chucking his visor into the stands on the way into the tunnel.

Postgame, Kiffin expressed excitement for winning the game as well as not getting drilled by anything from the bleachers. Tennessee head coach Josh Huepel said the following:

Based on the amount of trash strewn about the field as well as the forfeiture warning that went out in the midst of the chaos, it’s doubtful that the issue was only caused by a “few” fans. A seemingly inevitable disciplinary action is pending announcement.
