JJ Redick Retires After 15 Seasons in the League

NBA veteran sharpshooter JJ Redick announced his retirement Tuesday morning on his podcast The Old Man and the Three. The 37-year-old spent his last season with the New Orleans Pelicans and Dallas Mavericks.

In his announcement, Redick confirmed that he felt it was time to step away from the brotherhood of professional basketball and focus on fatherhood instead.

“I have some clarity now and I know it’s time,” Redick said. “It’s time for me to be a dad. It’s time for me to reflect, pause, and it’s time for me to get ready for the next phase of my life.”

The 15-year NBA vet played on six teams – the Pelicans, Mavericks, 76ers, Bucks, Clippers and Magic – scoring 12,028 points across his career while shooting an impressive 41.45% from deep, a mark that puts him 17th on the all-time three-point percentage list.

Before his NBA career began, Redick starred at Duke University under legendary head coach Mike Krzyzewski. He was the consensus national player of the year in 2006 and remains Duke’s all-time leading scorer at 2,769 points in his career. His No. 4 jersey was retired in 2007 and is hanging in the rafters at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Regarding his illustrious and long career, Redick had this to say:

“As a 7-year-old boy, I dreamed of playing at Duke as I got older. I dreamed of playing in the NBA,” Redick said on his “The Old Man and the Three” podcast. “The last 30 years of basketball have been beyond my wildest dreams. I never could have imagined that I would have played basketball for this long. After years of youth leagues, AAU, high school basketball, four years at Duke and 15 years in the NBA, I’m retiring from the game that I love so much.”
