Robert Williams Signs Four-Year, $54 Million Extension with Celtics

Robert Williams has signed a four-year, $54 million extension with the Boston Celtics, as first reported by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. Williams averaged 8.0 points and 6.9 rebounds in 52 games for the Celtics last season. According to ESPN, this deal puts the 23-year-old in the top half of centers’ earnings this season.

The deal is indicative of the Celtics’ hope for Williams to grow into one of the better rim runners and screeners in the league. He has only started 13 games in his career, all of which came last season, however, he did produce career high averages in points, rebounds and blocks (1.8) last season.

Williams’ extension is one of the series of moves conduced by Boston’s front office this offseason. The Celtics have made an effort to bolster their roster after a fairly abysmal 2020-21 campaign. With stars Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown and Marcus Smart all inked to long-term deals, newly promoted GM Brad Stevens has looked to sure up the holes in the squad. Al Horford will be making a return to Boston after being included in the Kemba Walker-Oklahoma City trade earlier this summer. Enes Kanter will also be returning to the TD Garden this season. Former Laker Dennis Schröder just inked a one-year, $5.9 deal with the C’s, while Stevens also brought in veteran wing Josh Richardson.

Earlier this week, Stevens had this to say regarding the Celtics’ moves this offseason and the current outlook for the upcoming campaign:

“This is complicated stuff from a numbers standpoint, but I think we do have some flexibility and some options, which is good. And we’ve got good players, so we’ve got a good foundation, and that’s exciting as well.”
