Caeleb Dressel, a swimmer for Team USA, won his third Olympic gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics by setting a new world record for the 100-meter butterfly.
He won the 100-meter butterfly in 49.45 seconds, breaking his own world record of 49.50 in the 2019 world championships. Hungary’s Kristof Milak, winner of the 200-meter butterfly, took silver at 49.68, which is .23 of a second behind Dressel. Switzerland’s Noe Ponti won the bronze in 50.74.
The swimmer also won gold in the 4×100 meter freestyle relay and 100-meter freestyle which he set an Olympic record of 47.02 seconds. He beat the defending Olympic champion, Australia’s Kyle Chalmers, to win by 0.06 seconds to win gold in the 100-meter freestyle. The 100-meter freestyle was also Dressel’s first individual Olympic gold.
“It means a lot [to win],” said Dressel on winning his first individual Olympic gold. “I knew that weight was on my shoulders – I’d won (Olympic) relay medals but never individual, so it was really special.”

In his last swimming events, he competed in the semifinals for the 50 freestyle and the 4×100 mixed medley relay, which is a new Olympic event that features two men and two women.
