The Mets Need Kris Bryant

The New York Mets are in first place in the NL East but they are far from a perfect ball club. Despite a loaded rotation, it still feels like the Mets need more pitching. Offense has always been the problem but things are getting desperate. The Cubs are dead ducks in the water looking to sell. The Mets should find any way possible to acquire Kris Bryant.

Third base is a huge hole for the Mets. Bryant would slide right in there perfectly. JD Davis and Jeff McNeil can both hit but are imperfect fits for the position. Oddly enough, both can play corner outfield spots and that’s okay. Bryant is versatile in his own right and can man the outfield too.

There are no two ways about it. The Mets need a bat. New York ranks 21st in average, 24th in homers, and 29th in RBI’s. If you’re going to make serious damage in October, you have to score runs. Bryant would be the perfect middle of the order bat to fix this offense.

Bryant isn’t my cup of tea but this just makes too much sense. Hole at third base, rental so the price isn’t outrageous, and reliable home run power (16 on the year). All things the Mets need. Bryant is a streaky hitter slashing just .262 on the season but does a damn good job getting on base (.349 OBP). He feels Mets in every sense of the word.

As I said, Bryant is a rental so the price shouldn’t be exorbitant. I would resist trading JD Davis for half a season of Bryant. Davis’ bat is too dangerous to give up on for a rental. Third base prospect Mark Vientos can be a headliner for a deal giving the Cubs a long term fix for the position. Throw in a flier or two to the deal and that should be enough to land Bryant.

Steven Cohen and the Mets front office has shown a willingness to be aggressive in year one of the takeover. Probably even too aggressive given the fact that the Francisco Lindor thing seemed like a disaster from the jump. Zack Scott’s number one priority should be finding a way to land Kris Bryant without giving up the farm to do so.
