Jadon Sancho Signed with Manchester United. Now What?

The deal that has been a long time coming finally appears to be complete. Borussia Dortmund announced Thursday morning that they reached an agreement with Manchester United over winger Jadon Sancho, according to ESPN. Sancho is currently playing for the England national team at the Euros, but the two clubs have agreed to a fee of €85 million for the 21-year-old’s services.

The English winger grew up playing for crosstown rival Manchester City, but the switch from baby blue to red does not appear to be an issue. For one, sources told ESPN that City will stand to make a profit of around €11 million from the deal. Sancho has long wished to join United with Dortmund club president Hans-Joachim Watzke saying this:

“It was the exemplary wish of Jadon,” Watzke said. “We would have liked to keep him. We reached a general agreement with Manchester United on the transfer of Jadon Sancho, pending full completion, as there are still some formalities to agree on and the medical check to be completed.”

According to a statement released from the German club, Sancho’s official move is pending a physical and some more detailed contract negotiations, but for now, the move is confirmed and the fee is agreed upon. What does this mean for United?

Well, United fans will be happy to bolster their squad with another young attacking talent to join the company of Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood, and Daniel James. Sancho should be an immediate starter for the club, likely slotting in as the right or left winger as the club seeks to reclaim its spot atop English football.

Sancho scored 16 goals and had 18 assists with Dortmund this past season and an attacking threat of Paul Pogba, Bruno Fernandes, Edison Cavani, Rashford and Sancho is a formidable threat for any opponent. A 4-2-3-1 formation would suit the club nicely, as Fernandes can play centrally with Rashford and Sancho coming off the wings as Cavani serves as the true #9 (striker) for a squad that will know how to score goals.

For now, though, United fans will have to wait and see if England manager Gareth Southgate gives the young attacker any minutes in the upcoming Euro knockout game(s) for the squad, although it seems unlikely.
