Ravens Sign Safety Eric Weddle

The Ravens have agreed to a four-year deal with former Chargers safety Eric Weddle. Kevin Acee of the San Diego Tribune was the first to report the move.

The Ravens now have endured a busy offseason that included the signing of tight end Benjamin Watson to go along with a number of restructured contracts. The team however did lose Kelechi Osemele and back up quarterback Matt Schaub. Steve Smith’s presence on the team may have swayed Weddle to sign with Baltimore as both players are former Utah alums.

Baltimore now has a massive overhaul of safeties that are bound to be reduced in some sort of fashion. Weddle joins Terrence Brooks, Kendrick Lewis, Matt Elam, and Will Hill as possible options as safeties. That list could also include Lardarius Webb who is expected to make the transition from corner to safety. The Ravens could still use some help at cornerback but make no mistake about it, the Weddle signing is a huge win for Baltimore.

In 2015 Weddle recorded 78 tackles over the course of 13 games. Weddle, 31, is a former 2nd round pick from Utah having spent his entire 9 year career with the Chargers. The Pittsburgh Steelers and Oakland Raiders were the other teams heavily involved in the Weddle sweepstakes.
