Marcelo Mayer Drawing Mega Comps

High school shortstop Marcelo Mayer is expected to become the first overall selection in the 2021 Rule 4 Amatuer first year MLB Draft. The Eastlake (Calif.) High School shortstop is the top prospect on MLB Pipeline’s Draft rankings thanks in large part to a monster senior season. Fellow high school shortstop Jordan Lawler are expected to be the top two picks in the draft as of now.

As it pertains to Mayer, the 6-foot-3 and 188 pound shortstop is drawing big time comparisons. What kind of player are the Pirates getting with Mayer? How does a mix of Corey Seager, Brandon Crawford, and Manny Machado sound?

“He’s like a combination of Seager and [Giants shortstop Brandon] Crawford for me,” an NL national scout told MLB.com in June. “But his body and the ease to the game he shows is more [Manny] Machado-esque.”

Mayer is committed to USC but obviously can’t turn down a chance to be the first pick in the draft. During his senior campaign, Mayer hit .392 average, 46 runs scored, 45 RBIs and 14 homers (just one shy of Adrián González’s single-season record at Eastlake) leading his school to a CIF title in June.

There is obviously more risk when selecting high school players in the draft. The scouts seem to be very much in on Marcelo Mayer. Time will tell if the Pirates make the right choice. Especially given the buzz the Vanderbilt pitchers Kumar Rocker and Jack Leiter have gotten.
