Mac Jones Might Not Have Much Fantasy Value In 2021

Mac Jones’ situation with the Patriots is not a bad one, considering how Tom Brady turned out after being drafted in the sixth round. Although Jones is no Tom Brady, he is in a situation that is somewhat akin to Brady’s. However that might not mean anything in 2021, and Jones might be the least playable fantasy QB rookie this year not because of ability, but because of opportunity.

First, look at the QB room. Cam Newton may not be what he used to be, but he might still be a capable signal-caller for the Patriots, and the organization might favor the veteran over the rookie this season. Whether or not Jones starts is dependent on his progression, as he was one of the hardest QB evaluations leading up to the 2021 NFL Draft. That uncertainty might be enough to put people off of him as a fantasy pick, but it is not the only reason behind Jones’ lack of value.

Even if Jones is the starter from the beginning of the season, the Patriots team is structured in a way that will not make him prevalent in fantasy. Other than Nelson Agholor, his WR corps is limited, and although the Patriots have two solid TEs in Hunter Henry and Jonnu Smith, the entire pass attack appears very awkward. Their running game is a different matter. They have four RBs that can start any game in Damien Harris, Sony Michel, James White, and Rhamondre Stevenson, and with the committee at running back, the team will likely not throw the ball all that much.

Some might think that Jones actually has fantasy potential but he does not, not this year. I will eat humble pie if he does but there is too much uncertainty around him and the Patriots themselves. Skip out on Jones this season, he will be way better as a fantasy option next year.
