London Gets Two NFL Games
In its continued expansion efforts, the NFL has once again scheduled games for the 2021 season in London, United Kingdom. The NFL will treat British fans to some mediocre American Football in the form of Jaguars-Dolphins and Falcons-Jets. The Jaguars have become quite familiar with the UK in recent years, as they have played a game in the UK every year since 2013 other than 2020.
The Dolphins are the only team in the “international series” group that has had anything close to resembling a winning season recently, but unlike previous seasons, Jacksonville is bringing a generational quarterback prospect in Trevor Lawrence. Lawrence and the Jags will play in the UK on Oct. 17, 2021, against Tua Tagovailoa and the Dolphins, with the Falcons-Jets game being played a week prior on Oct. 10, 2021. Both games will be played at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
What Should The UK Expect With These Two Games?
Londoners may not get the exciting football they are hoping for, but they will see young guns who could be part of the next generation of great quarterbacks. Jets quarterback Zach Wilson was selected second overall in the 2021 NFL Draft right behind Trevor Lawrence, and barring any injury concerns, both are expected to start week one. The Jets traded their third overall pick in 2018, Sam Darnold, to Carolina, and Lawrence is unsurprisingly listed ahead of sixth-rounder Gardner Minshew III on Jacksonville’s depth chart for 2021. It was also recently revealed that Jacksonville was bringing in Tim Tebow, who quarterbacked for Meyer at Florida back in the late 2000s, to play as a tight end. Both the Jaguars and Jets will enter the 2021 season with new head coaches as well. New York hired former 49ers defensive coordinator, Robert Saleh, while Jacksonville brought in legendary college football coach Urban Meyer to form a potentially dynastic duo with Lawrence.
Miami QB Tagovailoa will have the chance to prove that his disappointing 2020 campaign was a fluke. Tagovailoa has little room to make excuses, as the Dolphins drafted his former teammate, receiver Jaylen Waddle, with the sixth overall pick in the 2021 draft.
While the Jaguars, Dolphins, and Jets are all on the rise, the Atlanta Falcons are trending downward and appear to be on the road to becoming a complete dumpster fire. Atlanta could have had a fire sale last season at the deadline and moved former MVP Matt Ryan and elite receiver Julio Jones, but they instead chose to put themselves five years back and moved neither player. The Falcons had just one redeeming move of the offseason: drafting the most talented tight end prospect in years in Kyle Pitts.
