Michael Chavis Isn’t Sure He Has A Future With Red Sox
The Red Sox are loaded with infield options. Kike Hernandez figures to open as the starting 2nd baseman. Boston also signed Marwin Gonzalez as a utility player. Bobby Dalbec is set to play first base. Does Michael Chavis have a place on the roster?
According to Chavis, he’s not even sure. He’s made it no secret that he’s fighting for a roster spot at Spring Training.
“I’m not even sure if I have a place on the team,” Chavis admitted Wednesday. “That’s what I’m trying to earn. I’m not ashamed to say that, I’m not worried about it.”
“It’s obviously a little bit of an awkward situation, but I’m huge on mental skills,” Chavis said. “Everybody knows that. I’m able to rest my cap knowing that I did what I needed to do to prepare for this. I worked really hard this offseason. I truly did everything I could to prepare for this.”
Chavis, 25, looks good in Spring Training thus far. The former first round pick out of Georgia is hitting .429 with a pair of homers and a 1.429 OPS in six games. If Chavis is nervous about making the roster, he’s doing his part to stick.
The thing that maybe helps or hurts Chavis is the fact that he really doesn’t have a position. There’s also a dearth of infield options already on the roster. It’s only a matter of time before Jeter Downs makes his debut too. Chavis could find his way in AAA for a chunk of the season. Especially because he has minor league options remaining.
Until Chavis learns how to hit the high fastballs, he’s still a deficient hitter. The power stroke makes Chavis an intriguing long term piece but we’re still waiting for it to all come together.
