It’s not a secret that Major League Baseball television viewership lags behind basketball and football. No, baseball isn’t a dying sport, but it is less popular than these on a national stage. Part of this is due to the huge success that NFL Redzone has been able to execute. Redzone provides access to every football game including as many as 14 at the same time. They’re programming 24/7 and even will include access to the training camps as well as the draft. It also has a manageable price tag with some TV packages offering it as low as ten dollars per month. Sadly, MLBTV doesn’t even begin to come close to what the NFL counterpart offers.
MLBTV on the other hand is riddled with issues that still persist even after existing for a number of years. Fans of the game are absolutely fed up with the blackouts on “out of market” games as well continuously raising prices. It’s sad really because they know they can get away with raising the prices this season due to the inaccessibility of games. The price this season is going up to eight dollars from last year ending up at $130 for an entire year.
Other lame issues exist. Some fans complain that the quality of the games is not held to a high standard. It’s fairly common to have games streamed at 720p rather than 4K. This kind of thing will drive fans away. Another is the scam that people will go out of their way to buy a cable television package that includes MLB.TV, and result in the baseball services not even working on their televisions. These are unacceptable problems.
With the season starting soon, MLBTV needs to address these problems. Limited seating is causing ticket prices to skyrocket through the roof. It’s vital for the television alternative to be cheapener and user friendly if baseball wants to heighten any sort of popularity in the sports world.
