Some people think that it is time for Cam Newton to retire. However, Cam Newton is not one of those people. The former Panthers star and Patriots starter is now a free agent. Even after a rocky season with the Patriots, he has no plans on retiring. The 31-year-old quarterback remains confident that he can be a starter in the NFL, despite the people’s harsh criticisms of him.

In his first year with New England Newton threw for 2657 yards, 8 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. He finished ranked 24th in the NFL in passing years. Newton also finished 30th in QBR. Only in front of Nick Mullens, Nick Foles, and Sam Darnold. Without the context that is awful. Even with context, it’s still pretty bad. However, Newton remained effective in the ground game rushing for 592 yards and 12 touchdowns.

When asked about potentially retiring Newton had this to say.

“Hell no! I can’t go out like that. I hear all of that talk. My Pride won’t allow me to do it. There aren’t 32 guys better than me.”

Although he acknowledged his inconsistency, Cam Newton also pointed out that he has missed two weeks early in the season due to COVID-19. Newton thought that he would be able to adjust quickly after returning. However, that was obviously not the case. He stated that the challenge of an unusual offseason, and recovering for COVID was challenging, and had a larger impact than he expected.

“At the end of the day, sometimes you have to go through things in that type of manner to make you realize that you can’t skip the process. I went in there thinking like, ‘Aw man, I’m here now …But, bro, I needed time. I’ll be the first person to tell you, I needed time.”

It is unlikely that the Patriots re-sign Cam Newton, however, some teams may have some interest in the former MVP. Newton’s former head coach Ron Rivera was questioned about signing Newton to the Washington Football Team.

“I think the biggest thing we can say, guys, is that we’re exploring all of our options. Nothing is off the table. Again, as we go through this, we’re going to do what we believe is best for us.”

Ron Rivera on Cam Newton

Cam Newton has many doubters and haters. His time in the NFL as a starter may be coming to a close. However, he still believes that he can get the job done, and some teams still need a quarterback. So, don’t be surprised if you see Cam Newton starting next year, because Newton won’t be surprised.
