Andrew Benintendi was traded to the Kansas City Royals from the Boston Red Sox according to Jon Heyman.
The Red Sox, Royals and New York Mets were involved in a three way trade that involves the Mets receiving an outfield prospect from Kansas City’s farm system.
The Mets have been involved in tons of trade rumors and free-agent signings this year, and the Benintendi saga was no different. The Mets are looking to secure some role players and reserve players for the outfield, so this looked like he was going to wind up in Flushing. The Boston Red Sox got relief pitcher Josh Winckowski in the deal from the Mets.
Winckowski was acquired by the Mets in the Steven Matz trade earlier this off-season.
Benintendi was a young player who looked great for the Red Sox earlier in his career. He has not had the best last few seasons and in 2020 only appeared in 14 games while battling injuries. He hit for a .103 average during his short season.
He finished second in 2017 for Rookie of the Year, losing to Yankee Aaron Judge. 2018 was his best statistical season at the plate, he hit .290, drove in 87 runs, and homered 16 times. In 2018 during the Red Sox World Series championship run, he hit .333 in the biggest stage baseball provides.
That is when Benitendi started his struggles at the plate. He hit .266 the following year and only drove in 68 runs.
Benitendi who made his big league debut in 2016, signed a two year extension in Boston for two years and $10 million dollars in 2020.
