Should Deshaun Watson Want Out?
Deshaun Watson had another year of his superstar level talent wasted by the Houston Texans this season. Their season ended with a 4-12 record, 3rd in their division. Management sent away his best receiver in DeAndre Hopkins and his replacement Will Fuller V got suspended once he started performing. Should he want to leave the franchise?
Watson led the league in passing yards with 4,458 yards. The rumor came out on January 7th that Watson may want to play for another team if Houston can’t fix things. Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk says that “Rumors already are circulating, and we’ve already heard them from multiple different people, that Watson has quietly broached with teammates the possibility of requesting a trade.”
Could this spell the end of the Deshaun Watson era in Houston? I wouldn’t be so fast to jump to that. It is obvious that teams would have to give up a giant stash of picks and maybe even a player or two. Teams would also need to have enough cap to carry his $39 million per year contract. We don’t even know if the Texans would be willing to trade him due to the new GM and HC hiring this offseason.
Where could he go?
Who would even take him?? Well, there are quite a few teams that I think would love to have him as their Quarterback. The Colts, Steelers, Buccaneers, Jets, Patriots, and Jaguars jump out to me as potential destinations, barring the right prices. These are teams that will need a Quarterback more likely than not at the end of the season. Rivers, Big Ben, and Brady may decide to hang up the cleats. Cam most likely will walk into free agency, and we all know about the Jets and Jaguars.
With the new coaching change, it is likely that a trade will not happen. It is also worth noting that the Texans do not have a first-round pick in the upcoming draft. They gave that to the Dolphins in a trade for Laremy Tunsil.
