Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels has been a hot commodity for a head coaching job for much of the past couple of seasons. McDaniels, the Patriots incumbent offensive coordinator, says he simply wasn’t ready for the head coaching opportunity back in 2009 with the Broncos.
“Well, I wasn’t the last time,” McDaniels said, via Jeff Legwold of ESPN.com.
“Some of the things I failed at before, I think I learned from and am better for it. I think I am.”
When McDaniels took the Denver job he was only 33 and got stuck with Tim Tebow which ultimately lead to his demise. McDaniels was fired after just 28 games as a head coach going 11-17 during his tenure. John Elway fired him when he took over football operations in 2011.
As the Patriots offensive coordinator, it appears that he will only leave this time for the perfect situation. The Rams, Jaguars, and 49ers interviewed the Pats offensive coordinator this offseason but couldn’t hire him until New England was eliminated from postseason contention. Calling plays for Tom Brady is a job no one wants to leave. A head coaching job with an elite quarterback in place may be the only way to entice McDaniels to leave his post in New England.
