Is small ball coming to the city of Philadelphia? The 76ers have been one of the NBA’s biggest teams but are likely to experience a massive shift in philosophy. Daryl Morey is in the midst of finalizing a deal to become the 76ers president of basketball operations.

Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN was the first to report the news:

“Former Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey is finalizing a deal to become the Philadelphia 76ers’ new president of basketball operations, sources told ESPN.

A formal announcement is expected as soon as this week, sources said.

General manager Elton Brand is expected to remain in his current position, and new coach Doc Rivers is a proponent of the hiring, sources said. Rivers and Morey have a long history and strong relationship.

Morey has long been a target of 76ers ownership, turning down a chance to run the team two years ago before signing an extension with the Rockets.”

It didn’t take Morey long to find another job. Morey, 48, recently resigned from the same post with the Rockets earlier this month. Morey wasn’t even sure that he would accept another NBA job, ever again. After a strong push from the 76ers brass, Morey is now back and will be tasked with rebuilding Philadelphia.

Morey built the Rockets based on small ball and heavy three-point shooters. Several changes could be coming in Philadelphia. Joel Embiid, Al Horford, nor Ben Simmons is considered a strong shooter. The 76ers instantly become a fascinating team to watch this summer because the incumbent pieces on the roster are the antithesis of what Morey built in Houston.
