NHL New Wave; Connor McDavid

Connor McDavid is considered by many to be the best hockey player in the world. Any “proof” you have of him being human is fake, and I don’t believe you. McDavid, taken first overall in the 2015 NHL entry draft by the Edmonton Oilers, has done anything but disappoint

After playing in the Ontario Minor Hockey Association with the York-Simcoe Express, he moved to the Toronto Marlboros of the Greater Toronto Hockey League. Because of McDavid’s elite skill set, he was awarded Exceptional Player Status by Hockey Canada and was entered in the OHL Priority Selection at age 15, a year earlier than other players his age.

McDavid was selected by the Erie Otters and was awarded the Jack Ferguson Award, which is given to the top pick of the OHL Draft. He recorded a point in 15 consecutive games his inaugural season and broke countless rookie records. In McDavid’s final season before the NHL draft, he was the Otters captain and led the league in scoring and assists. He broke his hand in a fight and missed six weeks for recovery.

He signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Edmonton Oilers on July 23, 2015. On October 8, 2015, he made his debut in a game against the St. Louis Blues. That season he missed 37 games due to a broken clavicle and finished third for the Calder Memorial Trophy.

By McDavid’s sophomore season, he earned the captain’s title, becoming the youngest in NHL history at 19 years and 266 days, 20 days younger than Gabriel Landeskog of the Colorado Avalanche.

In 2017, he signed an eight-year $100 million extension with the Oilers making him the youngest highest-paid player in the league, surpassing Johnathan Toews, Carey Price, and Patrick Kane by over two million dollars annually.

In 2018 Connor McDavid entered his second NHL All-Star Game and was the first winner of the Fastest Skater Competition with a time of 13.3 seconds around the perimeter of the ice. He won this competition in 2019 as well, with a 13.4 second time.

In the 2019-20 season, he was good for 34 goals and 63 assists in the 64 games regular season. McDavid and the Oilers were only in the Playoff Bubble for a few days as they lost in the first round.

The future of Connor McDavid is bright. Clearly. From being drafted early at 15 to moving out to live with a host family, then on to be the youngest captain in league history. There are big shoes to fill, from Wayne Gretzky to Sydney Crosby. McDavid hides behind a shy stature but lacks no confidence in himself or his team.
