No, this story is not going away, nor should it. It’s one thing to trade Rafael Devers. It’s another to trade him without shopping the player when it stems from a lack of accountability and communication from the top.
Rival executives have taken notice, and it’s hard to ignore what they have to say. Do not click the links in the quote paragraphs, it’s from the scumbags at The Athletic locked behind a paywall. Regardless, we have two key quotes. One from an executive in the AL and NL.
One questions the return. The other questions the communication level from the top. Both, of course, very valid questions.
“Who’s (their) headliner?” an AL exec asked Stark. “That’s my big thought. Even if you just accept the decision to trade him in the first place and say we’re not going to debate that, I still think they could have and should have done better than they did.”
“What stands out the most is just how brutal the communication (with Devers) was on their side,” an NL exec told Stark. “It’s made me think about how we treat players (in his team’s organization) — how players are treated and respected, and the value of good communication, and how that affects and creates culture… I can’t even fathom that happening.”
The headliner? Oh, Kyle Harrison. Yeah, he’s in AAA and getting spanked while doing it.
Communication? Yeah, none of that either.
Imagine how stupid you have to be to defend Craig Breslow right now? Oh, wait… we found a coward who is doing just that!
