Nationals Fire Mike Rizzo, Dave Martinez

It’s officially the end of an era in Washington. The Nationals were swept by the Red Sox during 4th of July weekend, and ownership apparently saw enough. Both President of Baseball Operations Mike Rizzo and manager Dave Martinez were canned.

However, this might be the weirdest part, and when I say this, just know I’ve never seen it done this way before. Apparently, the Nationals have their own Medium side website? There’s something sketchy worth digging into there. Seriously, National Communications has its own medium site? Not buying it. It’s a higher-up who thinks he’s more important than he is, and ownership lets said person get away with it.

Either way, that’s where the press release was published.

“On behalf of our family and the Washington Nationals organization, I first and foremost want to thank Mike and Davey for their contributions to our franchise and our city,” Lerner said. “Our family is eternally grateful for their years of dedication to the organization, including their roles in bringing a World Series trophy to Washington, D.C. While we are appreciative of their past successes, the on-field performance has not been where we or our fans expect it to be. This is a pivotal time for our Club, and we believe a fresh approach and new energy is the best course of action for our team moving forward.”

The Nats are 37-53 as things stand right now, and I guess ownership didn’t want to wait any longer on this rebuild. Assistant GM Mike DeBartolo will take over on an interim basis.

I’ll be honest; I get why ownership pulled the plug because it’s been a long time since the Nats won on a big level, but Rizzo was genuinely doing a good job. I mean… look at the pieces he got back for Juan Soto. James Wood, MacKenzie Gore, and CJ Abrams? Plus more… That’s a hell of a haul. He probably deserved to see this rebuild through, but that’s not the world we live in.
