Fantasy Football: Darren Waller Comes Out Of Retirement To Join Dolphins

I did not have this one on my bingo card. Darren Waller is coming out of retirement, which was announced shortly after Jonnu Smith was sent to Pittsburgh. Should we actually take this news seriously in terms of fantasy football? Let’s have a quick chat and talk about it.

Let’s get this out of the way. Waller, 32, probably doesn’t have anything left. The former Georgia Tech product last played in 2023 with the Giants and posted 52 receptions for 552 yards and one score in 12 games that season. Can we really expect more than that when he’s no better than the third target behind Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle?

Sure, there’s still room for Waller to produce if he still has something left. Jonnu had a hell of a season last year, but expecting Waller to just come in and replicate that is probably foolish. Let’s also not forget the elephant in the room. Who’s to say he doesn’t go off the deep end and retires again?

Waller has one thing going for him. He’s a tight end, which means he can sleepwalk his way to a top 10 finish. How many good tight ends are there? It’s Brock Bowers. Then it’s a group of McBride, Kittle, and maybe LaPorta. End of list. I guess anything is possible in terms of who can emerge after that. If you want to take the shot, feel free, but I’m not taking this seriously beyond a $1 thing at the end of your draft as your TE2.
